About Virella

Most of what turns up under beauty branding needs work before it is usable. Virella is the version that does not. The listing shows 5.0 out of 5 on 1 review, which is better evidence than the thumbnail. Only 4 people have saved it so far, so this is our pick rather than the crowd's. Credit goes to Colourful.

We would use it the way the listing hints — boutique logo — and that is also where we would start if you are trying it for the first time. Serifs are for reading, so we look at a full sentence in the preview rather than a single word — the rhythm shows up only in a line of text. The licence tab and the full-size preview are the whole of our due diligence here, and they take about a minute between them.

If you came in looking for display serif, editorial font, elegant serif font and fashion font, you are in the right place — the listing carries all of those, which is the clearest sign the designer built it for that job rather than retitled it afterwards. We keep it under Serif Fonts, which is where to look if you want the rest of the serif fonts we have gone through. Put next to the usual requests here — serif fonts and script and serif font combinations — this one covers the plain version of the job, which is the version people need most often.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
