About Umbrix
What we like about Umbrix is how little it tries to be everything — it does 8 bit pixel font, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Display and Poster Fonts shelf. The designer behind it is dimukhi. It sits at 4 saves — too few to call it popular, which is exactly why it is worth a look before everyone else finds it. There are no reviews on it yet, so judge it by the preview and not by a score that does not exist.
A display font only has to work big, so we judge it at poster size and ignore how it looks in a paragraph — that is not its job. Put it to work on 90s video game font first. If it survives that, it will survive whatever you had in mind next. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every font on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.
Filed as abstract typography, aesthetic typography, arcade display font and artsy font. Tags are a rough instrument, but a consistent set like that usually means the file is what it claims. You will find it among the display and poster fonts, sorted next to everything that does roughly the same job. The neighbouring searches are poster, headline, vintage, retro and slab — worth a look if this particular font is close but not quite it. The searches that bring people to this shelf are vintage fonts commercial license, display fonts, vintage fonts canva, number fonts vintage and retro canva fonts — this one sits in the middle of that group rather than off to the side of it.

How to use this font
- Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
- Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
- Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
- Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
