About Magic Groove

What we like about Magic Groove is how little it tries to be everything — it does 70s design, and that is the job we wanted filled on the Display and Poster Fonts shelf. The save count is still small at 4, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus. Credit goes to BILLI. Nobody has reviewed it, which we do not hold against a new file — but it does mean the preview is the only honest evidence.

A display face has one job: be read big. We judge it at poster size and ignore how it behaves in a paragraph, because it will never be in one. We keep it filed mentally under 70s font, which is the use that needs the least adjusting afterwards. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every font on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

If you came in looking for 70s typography, album font, apparel font and bold font, you are in the right place — the listing carries all of those, which is the clearest sign the designer built it for that job rather than retitled it afterwards. The neighbouring searches are display, poster, headline, vintage and retro — worth a look if this particular font is close but not quite it. Judged against the requests we see — vintage fonts commercial license, display fonts, vintage fonts canva, number fonts vintage and retro canva fonts — this is a middle-of-the-road answer, and middle of the road is usually what the job needs. It is shelved with the rest of the display and poster fonts, and that is the quickest way to see what else sits in the same register before you settle on this one.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
