About Characin

The reason Characin is here is boutique logo and nothing else. It does not try to cover the next three jobs along, and we would rather it did not. Credit goes to grifvixcolor. No saves on it yet — new files sit like that for a while, and it says nothing about the file. Unreviewed so far — read that as untested rather than as a verdict.

A display face has one job: be read big. We judge it at poster size and ignore how it behaves in a paragraph, because it will never be in one. If you want one use for it, take chiseled blackletter: that is the direction the designer clearly had in mind, and it is the one we would follow. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every font on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

Filed as cosmetic packaging, dark academia font, decorative display font and editorial typeface. Tags are a rough instrument, but a consistent set like that usually means the file is what it claims. The neighbouring searches are poster, headline, vintage, retro and slab — worth a look if this particular font is close but not quite it. Judged against the requests we see — vintage fonts commercial license, display fonts, vintage fonts canva, number fonts vintage and retro canva fonts — this is a middle-of-the-road answer, and middle of the road is usually what the job needs. It is shelved with the rest of the display and poster fonts, and that is the quickest way to see what else sits in the same register before you settle on this one.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
