About Barlon

Barlon earned its place here for one reason: it is a straight answer to artistic, and straight answers are rarer in this font catalogue than you would think. It stands at 5.0 out of 5 across 1 review, and we read the low scores first when there are any. It comes from flavortype. 127 people have saved it over there, which tells us the idea works for more than just us.

Our own plan for it is art modern, because that is where this kind of font does the least arguing with you. A display font only has to work big, so we judge it at poster size and ignore how it looks in a paragraph — that is not its job. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every font on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

If you came in looking for art nouveau, you are in the right place — the listing carries all of those, which is the clearest sign the designer built it for that job rather than retitled it afterwards. You will find it among the display and poster fonts, sorted next to everything that does roughly the same job. Nearby you will see display, poster, headline, vintage and retro, which is where to go if this one is nearly right but not quite. The wording people arrive with is vintage fonts commercial license, display fonts, vintage fonts canva, number fonts vintage and retro canva fonts, and we would rather shelve for those requests than for how a thumbnail looks in a grid.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
