About Freya

Freya is our book cover typography pick, and it is a pick rather than a default — we looked at the shelf twice before leaving it on. Buyers put it at 5.0 out of 5 over 1 review; worth clicking through to see what they actually said. The designer behind it is Angel_Srapix. The save count is still small at 3, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus.

The obvious job for it is book spine font, and obvious is right here — the file was built around that and it shows. A decorative face carries one word, maybe two. If you are tempted to set a whole headline in it, set it in the preview first and see what happens. Open it big before you commit. At thumbnail size every font on this shelf looks equally good, which is the problem with thumbnails.

The listing files it under cover art, dust jacket design, editorial headline and independent design — those are the words it gets found by, and between them they describe the file better than any category name does. The wording people arrive with is blackletter font pairing, cinzel decorative font pairing, decorative script fonts, modern blackletter fonts and monogram fonts for cricut, and we would rather shelve for those requests than for how a thumbnail looks in a grid. If none of this quite fits, the adjacent requests are decorative, dingbat, blackletter, colorful and colour and they stay on this page. On this site it lives on the Decorative and Dingbat Fonts shelf, so it also turns up for people browsing decorative and dingbat fonts rather than searching for it by name.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
