About Blackbit

Blackbit earned its place here for one reason: it is a straight answer to 8 bit font, and straight answers are rarer in this font catalogue than you would think. The save count is still small at 42, so read this as our opinion and not a consensus. The designer behind it is Angin Studio. The buyers who left a word rate it 5.0 out of 5 — 1 review, all of them on the listing.

If you want one use for it, take blackletter: that is the direction the designer clearly had in mind, and it is the one we would follow. A decorative face carries one word, maybe two. Set the headline you actually want in the preview before deciding it carries more. One thing we always do and you should too: open the preview full size. A thumbnail hides exactly the detail that decides whether 8 bit font is really what you are getting.

It answers to fraktur, game font, pixel font and retro game, and that spread of wording is worth noting: a file tagged this consistently usually behaves the way the preview suggests. We keep it under Decorative and Dingbat Fonts, which is where to look if you want the rest of the decorative and dingbat fonts we have gone through. Related wording on the shelf: decorative, dingbat, colorful, colour and ornament. Same shelf, different phrasing, and the sort options above work across all of it. We track what people actually type before they land here: blackletter font pairing, cinzel decorative font pairing, decorative script fonts, modern blackletter fonts and monogram fonts for cricut. If that is roughly what you were after, this font is in the right family.

How to use this font

  1. Download the font from Creative Fabrica and unzip it — you normally get OTF and TTF of the same face, plus a licence file.
  2. Install the OTF if your software gives you the choice: it carries the alternates and ligatures that make a script face look handwritten.
  3. Restart the app you design in — Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space and Word all read the font list once, at launch.
  4. Read the licence before a paid job: personal and commercial use are priced apart, and a logo often needs the extended one.
